In December 2023, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights marked its 75th anniversary. Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 10 December 1948, the Declaration set out a common standard of fundamental rights for every person.
Its 30 articles cover civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights, including equality before the law, freedom of expression, freedom of thought and belief, education, work and an adequate standard of living.
A living reference
The anniversary is not only an occasion to look back. It is also an invitation to consider how well these rights are understood and applied today. Rights are more likely to be protected when people know what they are and can recognise when they are being denied.
Human-rights education therefore remains essential. Making the Declaration accessible to young people and the wider public helps transform its principles from a historic text into practical standards for everyday life.
