At the Palais des Nations in Geneva, a speech delivered around Human Rights Day explored a simple theme: peace and human rights work better together.
The speaker represented Youth for Human Rights Switzerland and United for Human Rights, alongside the Association for Human Rights Education (AEDH), at an event organised with the Italian partner Diritti Umani e Tolleranza.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights emerged from the experience of the Second World War and from the determination to protect human dignity through shared standards. Yet declarations alone cannot create peaceful societies. Education, awareness and the daily defence of rights are also essential.
The speech referred to the continuing scale of armed conflict and forced displacement as evidence that the work remains urgent. It stressed that peace is not only a matter for governments and diplomacy: schools, associations, families and individuals can help create a culture in which dignity, tolerance and non-violence are understood and practised.
